Week 4 was self-portraits. Not a whole lot to say about that, except I was only able to get one “finished” piece done because of Thanksgiving. Here’s that:
Week 5 was plein air painting. “En plein air” is a French expression meaning “in the open air.” Our assignment was to go outside and do some outdoor painting of landscapes, or just whatever. Since it’s been in the single digits here in Iowa, and windy, I’m not going outside for shit. So it was a week of finding large windows and going from there. Turns out that works pretty well when the weather’s lousy, except your scenery is limited.
And I also wanted to take a break and do my own thing for a moment, so I decided to continue with this pixel art project I was doing some time ago, creating pixeltown images of the buildings on the Iowa State University campus. Here is Catt Hall, which houses the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences:
I really have a lot of fun doing these pixel art buildings. Also, the more of them you do, the easier it becomes because you’ve already created things like steps, windows, and brick textures. I’ve got it down to a science at this point.
EDIT: I almost forgot… I did another master study. I really enjoyed doing this one. I discovered this brilliant landscape painter, Carlos de Haes. I love his stuff!
…and a quick imaginative sketch. Okay, I believe that is all for now.
